This Saturday afternoon, 30 November (St Andrew’s Day), at 4 pm sees the presentation of our proposals for the new Vicars’ Board. It’s based on four years of research into the validity of the list of Vicars which has been hanging in the church for probably about 100 years.
We’ve uncovered a number of previously unknown vicars but I’m afraid we had to axe 8 who were not vicars at all. So we are calling it the Lost and Found Vicars of Steyning.
Now’s the time for us to explain to you why we made the decisions we did.and discuss the decisions with anyone who doesn’t agree. The new list starts back in 1278. It’s a fascinating story of English history through wars, the Reformation, Cromwell and the Interregnum, the Restoration and the Victorian period when our church would probably have collapsed if it wasn’t for its devoted Vicar’s efforts.
Our present Vicar, Chris Tod, Brian Hanson and I will all take turns to explain all this to you – there will be mulled wine and nibbles in the interval and we may even hear from the Vicar of Bray (briefly). We won’t unfortunately be hearing from Christopher Whittick (who made important contributions) as he has to be in Oxford this week (this event was of course postponed from 13 October).
Do come, no need to book, and no charge (there will as usual be a collection). It should be over by obout 6.30-7 (depending on how many questions you have).. I hope to see you there.
