Walter Potter was born in Bramber in 1835 and his hobby of stuffing small animals and birds and arranging them in striking tableaux led to the opening of The Potter’s Museum of stuffed animals in Bramber which became a popular tourist destination from the late 1880’s. But as tastes changed this museum of curiosities was sold off and was eventually dispersed by auction in September 2003. The management committee of Steyning Museum decided it should try to acquire one the taxidermy exhibits for the collection of Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding but unfortunately prices were sky high and well beyond our budget. However local resident Gwen Buchanon donated her mother’s pet canary which was stuffed by Mr Potter in around 1900.
