Elsie (1893-1990) & Doris (1904-1978) Waters were prolific stars of stage, screen and radio. They lived in Steyning from the early 1930s. Born in Peckham (London) they came from a musical family and their brother was Jack Warner (1896-1981) who became famous as Dixon of Dock Green, a police TV series of the 1950s and 60s. Elsie and Doris took a lively and active interest in the life of Steyning and the museum has a number of mementoes of their long and varied career.
The museum has 3 complete costumes worn by Gert & Daisy and this one is the “Tea Trolley overall” worn in one of their lesser known sketches lampooning British Rail catering. We also show on rotation their “Bar Maids” costumes and an orange evening dress worn on one of their tours to entertain the troops. Just £15 sponsors this display cabinet for a year and whichever costume it contains.
At one point Elsie and Doris were the UKs highest paid female performers.
