Our latest exhibition celebrates the lives of those famous Steyning residents, Elsie and Doris Waters - otherwise known as the comedy duo Gert and Daisy.
A few months ago the museum was contacted by the executor of the estate of Elsie and Doris' nephew, who died leaving a large collection of items belonging to his aunts. Knowing of the connection that Elsie and Doris had with Steyning, the executor asked if the museum would be interested in acquiring any of the sisters' large collection of material from their performing days. Our curator went up to London with several suitcases and returned weighed down with costumes, letters, songs, records, photos, show scripts, posters and more.
Elsie and Doris were much loved comedians on stage, film and radio, especially during World War II when they travelled abroad to entertain the troops. Steyning Museum is now in possession of an invaluable archive of the sisters' life and work. Our temporary exhibition shows some of this treasure trove of newly discovered material.
Steyning Museum is open 5 days each week - 10.30 to 12.30 and 2.30 to 4.30 (4.00 October to April) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (open all day Saturday) plus Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays.
