Our main summer exhibition is now open.  Entitled "Tracing Family Histories", it concentrates on four local families: the Woolgars, Wests, Michells and Worsfolds.

The displays show how the use of the Museum archives, objects from our collections and enthusiastic help from the families concerned can help to unravel the fascinating lives and times of our recent ancestors and raise many questions and not a few smiles.

For example, how come the Michells, the brewers, had a teetotal tract in their home or the Wests, the printers, advertised "Loose Literature for Languid Loungers" in their staid little pamphlet !  The Worsfold story was based on research around their three Wiston school samplers, the first dated 1890, which led on to school log books, attendance records, the internet ...

The Woolgar family is quite remarkable in the completeness of their family history records, tracing their origins far beyond their emergence as Bramber and Beeding wheelwrights in 1779.

Having seen these cleverly linked and co-ordinated displays we are sure our visitors will be inspired to start their own family research.

And a little taste of things to come: our August mini-exhibition is entitled "Piss Pots of Old Steyning."  Need we say more !

Steyning Museum is open 5 days each week - 10.30 to 12.30 and 2.30 to 4.30 (4.00 October to April) on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday plus Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays.
