For May 10, 2009

The newly opened exhibition at Steyning Museum shows that anyone can become an artist.  It consists of works by twenty watercolourists, from complete beginners to those with some years’ practice, from East and West Sussex, Surrey and Kent, who are all students of the 2008/9 classes run by Jackie Binns, M.Des. (Royal College of Art).

Jackie, who is also a senior tutor at West Dean College, has been teaching at her Watercolour Studio in Steyning for 18 years and the exhibition is living proof of the results her tuition achieves.  She teaches a wide variety of methods and techniques that can be used on any number of different subjects, which can be seen in practice in the works on display.

As well as finished works by her students the exhibition includes demonstrations of Jackie’s methods through different exercises and building up pictures from first sketch and choice and mixing of colours to finished works, from simple, single-line portraits to mixed-media landscapes.  Full details of courses are available at the museum.

Also on display at the museum is the latest delightful work by the magical artist Katie Sleight whose exhibition at the museum last summer enraptured viewers. Her latest work is her St Cuthman’s Field triptych, three large panels depicting different parts of the field, which is itself visible from the museum, at different times of day and dusk.

Typically of Katie’s work she combines a naturalist’s eye for the tiniest details of wildlife and plantlife while her mystical imagination fills the accurately observed landscapes with people from history, from faery, from dreams and even nightmares.  Each panel deserves and repays the closest study, and you will still see plenty you have missed when you come back for another look.

Steyning Museum is open 5 days each week - 10.30 to 12.30 and 2.30 to 4.30 (4.00 October to April) on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday plus Sunday afternoons and Bank Holiday Mondays.
